William James Sidis

William James Sidis was a genius. He was by far the most precocious intellectual child of his generation. His death in 1944 as an undistinguished figure was made the occasion for reawakening the old wives tales about nervous breakdowns, burned out prodigies and insanity among geniuses.

Young Sidis was truly an intellectual phenomenon. His childhood achievements ranked with those of John Stuart Mill, Thomas Macaulay, and Johann Goethe. By the time William Sidis was two he could read English and, at four he was typing original work in French. At the age of five he had devised a formula whereby he could name the day of the week for any given historical date. At eight he projected a new logarithms table based on the number twelve. He entered Harvard at the age of twelve and graduated cum laude before he was sixteen. Mathematics was not his only forte. At this age he could speak and read fluently French, German, Russian, Greek, Latin, Armenian and Turkish. During his first year at Harvard University the boy astounded students and scientists with his theories on "Fourth Dimensional Bodies."

The "man behind the gun" in this boy's amazing intellectual attainments is supposed to have been his father, a graduate in psychology at Harvard and a close friend of William James, after whom the boy was named. Dr. Boris Sidis believed in awakening in the child of two an interest in intellectual activity and love of knowledge. If you started early enough and worked intensively, Dr. Sidis claimed that by ten a child would acquire a knowledge equal to that of a college graduate. The boy’s father published articles urging other parents to follow his methods. He castigated the school authorities for their "cramming, routine and rote methods," which he said, "tend to nervous degeneracy and mental breakdown."

Sidis pointed to his son, William, as a successful example of his methods. He wrote: "At the age of twelve the boy had a fair understanding of comparative philology and mythology. He is well versed in logic, ancient history, American history and has a general insight into our politics and into the ground-work of our constitution. At the same time he is of extremely happy disposition, brimming over with humor and fun?"

Whether or not his childhood life was psychologically normal, William's life after Harvard was a series of unhappy incidents. He engaged in obscure mechanical jobs because, it was reported, "he did not want to think." At the age of twenty-four he estranged himself from his parents and to his last days the gap between parents and son remained unreconciled, though toward his sister he always felt a brotherly love which was expressed by a bond of friendship and mutual interests. Toward the press, William Sidis bore an everlastingly strong hatred.

From this story the newspapers and the general public drew some ill-formed conclusions about William Sidis and genius in general. Newspaper writers pointed out that his "genius had burned out," that he was "tired of thinking." By comparison it was stated that musical geniuses are less likely to burn out. The father’s system was held responsible for making the boy a prodigy. The parental pushing was blamed for the mental breakdown and antisocial attitude. From his desire to keep out of the limelight and taking obscure jobs that would pay for his subsistence, William Sidis, the boy prodigy, was made out to be at the time of his death a lonely, eccentric, prodigious failure" whose intellect had deteriorated.

According to several newspaper reports, William' Sidis was supposed to have had a brief mental breakdown at the age of twelve, after which it was said, "he returned to school brilliant as ever, but moody, and distrustful." Let us examine some of the true facts the background of this case of genius.

I first checked on the occurrence of the supposed brief mental breakdown. Students of abnormal psychology know that "brief mental breakdowns" in children of twelve are extremely rare. Both William's mother and his sister Helena, informed me that "he did not have a nervous breakdown." Replies to correspondence from many persons who knew William Sidis have convinced me that the idea of his having had a mental breakdown either early or late in life is erroneous. It seems that during the summer vacation when as a youngster the newspapers reported him to have suffered his mental illness he was at his father's sanitarium at Portsmouth, New Hampshire. But, as his sister explained, "this was their home." Dr. Boris Sidis ran a sanitarium for the cure of psychopathic cases and the Sidis family, including William, lived there.

It is true that the father's concentration on academics to the complete neglect of play and friends for the boy was wrong and unhealthy by any standards. However, the boy had a prodigious capacity to begin with. At five he had a mathematical ability that surpassed his father's. And it is doubtful whether the parents could have curbed it. Consider little Joel Kupperman, the "wonda child" of the Quiz Kids. At the age of five he did algebra and geometry problems mentally that few college professors could imitate. The Kuppermans are above average in intelligence, the mother is a former teacher, and the father, an engineer. They have used no system with Joel. His mother says: "Where he learns these things is more than I know," but they keep him supplied with all the books he wants.

An older youngster, whose history appears to approximate more closely that of young Sidis, is Master Merrill Kenneth Wolf, enrolled as a sophomore at Yale University at the age of twelve. The boy's parents, both attorneys, insist that they are average persons in such matters as intelligence and attainments. Yet, the father. Morris H. Wolf, never attended school but like his son studied law at home; formerly a reporter for the London Daily Mail, he has published three books and is an accomplished musician. Mrs. Wolf had informed reporters that the education of their son began when he amazed them by starting to talk at the age of four months. By the time he was two, Kenneth Wolf had finished all juveniles and showed an interest in adult works of science, history, and philosophy. In addition to his grasp of French, English grammar, zoology, and chemistry, the boy is a musical prodigy with that rare gift of absolute pitch.

Regardless of their zeal, neither the Kuppermans, the Wolfs, nor the Sidises could have given their children the stupendous intellectual capacities that these youngsters manifested at so tender an age. Their giving was primarily in the nature of the germ plasm, followed to some extent by educational nurture.

Returning to William Sidis, the facts in his background are more convincing as concerns family heritage. His mother schooled herself at home through elementary and high school, and then was accepted at the Boston University School of Medicine where she received her M.D. degree. Boris Sidis, William's father, earned three degrees from Harvard before he was thirty, though he arrived from Russia at the age of twenty. Moreover, on both parental sides, the family, from grandparents to cousins, includes many whose prodigious intellect is a matter of world renown.

In any case, we can be quite certain that genius is not made by parents' actions. No, William Sidis was not made a prodigy by his father, he was born to be one.

That Sidis was socially maladjusted as an adult cannot be attributed to any simple set of circumstances. That he had not been taught to play in childhood may be considered a definite parental lack of foresight contributing to this maladjustment. However, we must recognize that it is not easy to find playmates or childish games to amuse or interest an adult mind in a young body. The parents of any precocious child will testify to that.

That William Sidis, as a youngster, had been unwholesomely placed in the public eye by association with his father's psychological fame, is a fact of record. Out of this probably grew the eventual separation between patents and son when the youth reached adulthood. As long as he lived, the thought of being considered a public spectacle was positive poison to the soul of Bill Sidis. He refused to have his name attached to any of his later writings and turned down offers of large sums from publishers who would not agree to his use of a pen-name. He won a successful suit against the New Yorker Magazine for placing him in a ridiculous light in the public eye in 1937 in one of their "profiles." Sarah Sidis gave a partial explanation for her son's lifelong animosity toward the press. She related that as a child, returning home from school, a couple of newspapermen would descend upon the boy. While one held him, the other would take his picture. As a youth and as a man, Bill Sidis wanted to be left alone to live as an average individual, and said so, many times. He object bitterly to the idea of being stamped a "genius" and treated as side-show with the connotation of "queerness" that he knew to be associated with genius in the uninformed public mind. After his death, one friend of Bill Sidis wrote a letter which appeared in the Contributor's Column of the Boston Traveler in objection to false impressions given in the many newspaper obituary accounts. Varises, Penyebab dan Cara Mengatasinya

Bila di kaki Anda terlihat urat-urat halus menyembul di seputar betis belakang, bisa jadi Anda terkena kelainan yang disebut varises. Kelainan ini terjadi di pembuluh darah balik (vena) yang berfungsi mengangkut darah sisa metabolisme dari seluruh jaringan tubuh dan kembali ke jantung.

Varises menyebabkan sirkulasi darah menjadi tak lancar, karena terhambat di sekitar betis dan tungkai kaki saat menahan berat tubuh. Selain di bagian kaki, belakangan diketahui bahwa ternyata varises pun bisa terjadi di bagian lengan.

Penyebab varises:

- Berkurangnya elastisitas dinding pembuluh vena yang menyebabkan pembuluh vena melemah dan tak sanggup mengalirkan darah ke jantung sebagaimana mestinya. Aliran darah dari kaki ke jantung sangat melawan gravitasi bumi, karena itu pembuluh darah harus kuat, begitu juga dengan dinamisasi otot disekitarnya.

- Rusaknya katup pembuluh vena, padahal katup atau klep ini bertugas menahan darah yang mengalir ke jantung agar tidak keluar kembali. Katup yang rusak membuat darah berkumpul di dalam dan menyebabkan gumpalan yang mengganggu aliran darah.

Pemicu varises :

1. Faktor keturunan
Varises biasanya terjadi saat dewasa akibat perubahan hormon dan bertambahnya berat badan. Varises yang terjadi di usia muda, kemungkinan besar disebabkan faktor keturunan.

2. Kehamilan
Meningkatnya hormon progesteron dan bertambahnya berat badan saat hamil yang kaki semakin terbebani, akibatnya aliran darah dari kaki, tungkai, pangkal paha dan perut bagian bawah pun terhambat.

3. Kurang gerak
Gaya hidup perkotaan yang kurang gerak, menyebabkan otot sekitar pembuluh darah vena tidak mampu memompa darah secara maksimal.

4. Merokok
Kandungan zat berbahaya dalam rokok membuat pembuluh darah menjadi kaku dan terjadi penyempitan, sehingga dinding pembuluh tidak elastis lagi.

5. Terlalu banyak berdiri
Berdiri terlalu lama membuat kaki terlalu berat menahan tubuh dan memperparah beban kerja pembuluh vena dalam mengalirkan darah. Bila profesi Anda mengharuskan banyak berdiri, usahakan untuk tidak berdiri dengan posisi statis (diam), tapi tetap bergerak. Misalnya dengan berjalan di tempat, agar otot tungkai dapat terus bekerja memompa darah ke jantung.

6. Menderita kolesterol tinggi dan kencing manis
Kedua jenis penyakit ini berhubungan erat dengan masalah peredaran darah, kelainan pembuluh darah dan kegemukan yang memicu terjadinya varises.

7. Memakai sepatu hak tinggi
Hak sepatu yang terlalu tinggi membuat gerak otot tumit yang berfungsi membantu kerja pembuluh darah, menjadi tidak maksimal.

Gejala terjadinya varises:

- Mula-mula kaki dan tungkai terasa berat, diikuti otot yang mudah pegal, kaku, panas dan sakit di seputar kaki maupun tungkai. Biasanya rasa sakit dirasakan menjelang malam, akibat tidak lancarnya aliran darah.
- Mudah kram, meski kaki dalam kondisi santai.
- Muncul pelebaran pembuluh darah rambut yang mirip jaring laba-laba (spider navy).
- Perubahan warna kulit (pigmentasi) di seputar mata kaki, akibat tidak lancarnya aliran darah. Kadang diikuti dengan luka di sekitar mata kaki yang sulit sembuh.
- Kaki bengkak (edema) karena adanya pembendungan darah.
- Perubahan pada pembuluh vena luar, misalnya di betis bagian belakang tampak urat kebiru-biruan dan berkelok-kelok. Keadaan ini merupakan gejala varises kronis.

Mengatasi Varises:

A. Varises jenis spider navy.
Varises ini tergolong ringan, biasanya akibat suhu yang terlalu panas atau dingin, terpapar sinar matahari terus menerus, sedang hamil, faktor keturunan, kebiasaan makanan sarat rempah dan pedas, serta pengobatan hormonal.

Varises jenis ini bisa terjadi di beberapa tempat, yaitu di wajah, pangkal lengan, paha, daerah lutut, pergelangan kaki dan tumit. Terapi yang digunakan biasanya dengan memakai sinar laser, sehingga pembuluh darah mengering. Ada juga terapi alat listrik dengan memasukkan zat tertentu ke dalam kulit, untuk mengecilkan atau mengerutkan pembuluh darah.

B. Varises dalam kulit.
Varises ini terjadi pada pembuluh vena yang halus dan tipis di dalam kulit bagian kaki. Mengobatinya, dokter memberi obat-obatan yang menguatkan dinding vena dan memperlancar aliran darah, atau menggunakan stocking khusus varises.

Stocking ini berfungsi menekan pembuluh vena sehingga otot dan dinding vena bisa kembali bekerja maksimal. Stocking mampu mencegah, mengurangi gejala awal, dan rasa sakit penderitanya meski hanya temporer. Jadi, tetap harus minum obat.

C. Varises Reticular Varicose Veins
Ini adalah varises yang lebih parah, karena terjadi di pembuluh vena bawah kulit. Untuk mengobatinya, dokter akan melakukan beberapa tahap:

1. Memberi obat yang diminum untuk menguatkan dinding vena dan melancarkan peredaran darah.
2. Memberikan suntikan zat iritasi ke dalam pembuluh darah yang rusak atau melebar.
3. Obat tersebut akan membentuk jaringan ikat sekaligus menutup aliran darah, sehingga pembuluh darah vena akan menyempit. Darah akan mencari 'jalan lain' melalui pembuluh vena yang normal.
4. Setelah disuntik, Anda harus menggunakan stocking varises dan tidak boleh menggunakan sepatu hak tinggi.
5. Olahraga yang dianjurkan adalah jalan kaki, berenang dan joging, agar otot kaki mampu berkontraksi dengan baik.

D. Varises kronis.
Varises tahap ini akan memperlihatkan pembuluh darah yang berkelok-kelok di betis. Bila suntik tidak membuahkan hasil, maka harus dilakukan pembedahan guna memotong pembuluh vena yang rusak sehingga aliran darah kembali normal.

Ada berbagai obat-obatan yang harus Anda minum untuk menguatkan dinding vena dan melancarkan peredaran darah. Stocking varises juga harus dikenakan selama beraktivitas, tidak memakai sepatu hak tinggi dan berolahraga dengan melatih gerak otot kaki dan tungkai.

Cara menghindari varises:

1. Seusai beraktivitas setiap hari, berbaringlah dengan posisi kaki dan tungkai lebih tinggi dari jantung selama 20 menit. Bagi yang sudah menderita varises, usahakan tidur dengan posisi seperti ini sepanjang malam. untuk melancarkan peredaran darah ke jantung.
2. Lakukanlah yoga setiap hari.
3. Jangan berdiri terlalu lama.
4. Olahraga rutin untuk melatih otot kaki: jalan santai, jalan cepat; joging, bersepeda, berenang (minimal 30 menit per hari).
5. Jangan memijat daerah yang bervarises, karena dapat menyebabkan pecahnya pembuluh vena. Lakukan pijatan secara ringan namun teratur, di daerah rawan varises dengan arah menuju jantung. Lakukan dengan lembut dan gunakan minyak esensial yang sudah dilarutkan.
6. Perbanyak konsumsi sayuran dan buah berserat tinggi dan makanan yang dapat merangsang sirkulasi darah, seperti bawang merah, bawang putih, bawang bombay, jahe dan cabai merah. Juga makanan yang kaya dengan vitamin B kompleks, vit C, vit E, vit B6, magnesium, asam folat, kalsium dan zinc.
7. Kurangi konsumsi gula, garam, daging merah, gorengan, dan protein hewani.
8. Sering-sering duduk berselonjor kaki, tungkai dan panggul.

Pengobatan alernatif untuk varises:

- Minum jus campuran wortel, seledri dan peterseli; atau campuran wortel bayam dan ketimun; campuran wortel, bit dan ketimun; campuran wortel, bayam dan seledri atau jus selada air; yang berkhasiat memperlancar sirkulasi darah sekaligus memperkuat dinding pembuluh darah.

- Konsumsi makanan kaya lesitin, seperti kacang kedelai; peterseli, air jahe serta pepermint yang bermanfaat memperlancar sirkulasi darah dan menguatkan dinding pembuluh darah.

- Minum teh herbal yang terbuat dari bunga jeruk nipis, mint, ginko biloba dan grape seed (biji anggur).

- Pijat aroma terapi dengan bahan minyak cypress yang berkhasiat merangsang sirkulasi darah dan menguatkan dinding pembuluh darah. Pilihan lainnya: minyak lavender, rosemary, mint atau lemon.

- Berendam bergantian di air panas (suhu 41-43 derajat Celcius) dan air dingin (suhu 15 derajat Celcius), masing-masing selama 15-30 detik dan di ulang selama 30 menit, untuk melancarkan peredaran darah serta menguatkan dinding pembuluh darah.

- Atau semprotkan kaki secara bergantian, terutama di daerah betis bagian belakang, dengan air panas dan air dingin seperti di atas.

- Pijat refleksi di ujung saraf telapak kaki dapat membantu membuang tumpukan kristal dari sisa metabolisme di ujung-ujung syaraf, atau lakukan akupunktur dan akupresur di titik-titik tertentu.

Mengatasi kaki lelah:

Bila Anda bekerja terlalu lelah, terutama di bagian kaki seperti kerap menggunakan sepatu berhak tinggi, berjalan jauh atau terlalu berdiri, berhati-hatilah dengan gejala yang mengarah ke varises. Untuk mengatasinya, Anda dapat melakukan beberapa hal berikut:

- 3 liter air hangat
- 100 gr garam khusus untuk mandi
- 2 sdm minyak almond;
- 5 tetes minyak rosemary dan geranium; 5 tetes daun rosemary dan daun geranium segar beberapa helai (jika ada).

Cara membuat:
1. Campur semua bahan jadi satu dan tempatkan di wadah yang cukup untuk merendam kaki.
2. Rendam kaki selama 10-15 menit sambil menggosok perlahan telapak kaki dengan garam mandi.
3. Bila garam sudah larut, tambahkan kembali.
4. Diamkan kaki sampai air menjadi dingin.
5. Keringkan kaki, lalu rentangkan kaki lebih tinggi dari posisi tubuh.
6. Lakukan relaksasi ini sambil mendengarkan musik lembut, pejamkan mata dan gunakan lampu temaram.
